Howarth, Albany E. (1872-1936)
Etcher and watercolourist, born in Durham. Worked initially
in the drawing offices of Armstrong Mitchell, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and later as
an illustrator for northern papers and periodicals. Travelled extensively round
Britain and western Europe. Published etchings of Oxford Univerity
colleges 1909; of Cambridge colleges in 1910 and of Venice in 1912.
Elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers,
1910; had a solo exhibition at Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell, 1912. Also
exhibited at the Royal Academy, Agnew's, Colnaghi's, Fine Art Society, Walker
Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
Author of 'The Art of Making Fine Prints', 1901 (reprinted by Nabu Press,
2010). Lived in London, 1905; Essex 1906-20 and in Watford from 1920 until his
death in 1936.
